“In these uncertain times…” This phrase has become increasingly common in recent years. How can we respond to it in a mindful, positive way?
My first instinct when facing an uncertain situation is to work it out with pen and paper, whether it’s event planning or relationship woes or anything in between. “Uncertain times” are no exception. Writing is a mindful practice. Something that’s always good to engage in when under stress. And my notebook is a constantly available listener. Completely non-judgmental.
I’m not very good at using journal prompts, to be honest. With a little bit of research, though, I’ve come up with some (I think) helpful prompts that loosely reflect my process. If you’re new to journaling, a journal skeptic, or a journal prompt lover … here’s what I found:
journal prompts for uncertain times
- What feels specifically uncertain to me, personally, right now?
- Is this uncertainty showing up as physical symptoms in my body? How?
- Is there a positive next step I can take to help or ease the uncertainty?
- Can I name one thing I’m grateful for in spite of uncertainty?
While these journal prompts provide a bit of a thought process, each one of them stands alone. And any one of them is a great starting place. There are no rules.
And, we are definitely not alone in this. I promise you there are notebooks all over the world filled with the anxieties of uncertain times. A mindful practice is one good way to help us move forward.

P.P.S. I’m snacking on these low sugar, plant-based snacks, so good for satisfying a craving. (We get them at Costco.)
