Journal Prompts for Uncertain Times

A top down view of journaling on a wood surface. on the left is a cup of coffee on a white macrame coaster. In the centre is a brown pencil case opened to show a wood rubber date stamp, a clear fountain pen and four neutral bush markers. On the right and partially under the pencil case is a traveler's notebook opened to a blank page decorated at the top and bottom left corner with neutral collage papers and tapes. The notebook is held open with a large skeleton clip at the top. Above the notebook is a partial view of some leaves from a houseplant.

“In these uncertain times…” This phrase has become increasingly common in recent years. How can we respond to it in a mindful, positive way?

My first instinct when facing an uncertain situation is to work it out with pen and paper, whether it’s event planning or relationship woes or anything in between. “Uncertain times” are no exception. Writing is a mindful practice. Something that’s always good to engage in when under stress. And my notebook is a constantly available listener. Completely non-judgmental.

I’m not very good at using journal prompts, to be honest. With a little bit of research, though, I’ve come up with some (I think) helpful prompts that loosely reflect my process. If you’re new to journaling, a journal skeptic, or a journal prompt lover … here’s what I found:

journal prompts for uncertain times

  1. What feels specifically uncertain to me, personally, right now?
  2. Is this uncertainty showing up as physical symptoms in my body? How?
  3. Is there a positive next step I can take to help or ease the uncertainty?
  4. Can I name one thing I’m grateful for in spite of uncertainty?

While these journal prompts provide a bit of a thought process, each one of them stands alone. And any one of them is a great starting place. There are no rules.

And, we are definitely not alone in this. I promise you there are notebooks all over the world filled with the anxieties of uncertain times. A mindful practice is one good way to help us move forward.

P.S. This Morning Coffee playlist is on in the background right now (in the afternoon!).

P.P.S. I’m snacking on these low sugar, plant-based snacks, so good for satisfying a craving. (We get them at Costco.)

I’ve set up space for 20 things (because 2020) but if I feel like turning the page and writing more I will. There are no rules to journaling. Wishing you all a lovely few more days of this year. 🤍

Earlier this year I made a commissioned piece for a virtual healing circle. I was honored to contribute to such a beautiful and necessary event. It’s now many months later ... but in the midst of pandemic and holidays and lockdown, it’s still important that Black lives matter.
